2003 U.S. Open Goose Calling Contests
The U.S. Open Goose Calling Championship™ is history, and Kelley Powers is again the undisputed champion. In the first round Kelley drew number one, a situation that usually spells doom to a contest caller, but he pulled through and finished the round trailing Hunter Grounds, Tony Caschera and Sean Hammock. After a perfectly executed routine in the second round, Kelley took the lead and never looked back. This made for Kelley's second U.S. Open win in just three years.
The U.S. Open is actually a series of contests featuring the U.S. Open Novice Goose Calling Championship™, World Team Goose Calling Championship™, Jr. U.S. Open Goose Calling Championship™ and finally the U.S. Open Goose Calling Championship™. In order to qualify for the U.S. Open, callers must have placed first or second in an open goose calling contest. The purse for this series is in excess of $20,000, making this the richest waterfowl calling event in the world. This purse is made possible by a host of sponsors, including title sponsors Avery® Outdoors, Inc., Mack's Prairie Wings, Advantage® Camouflage, Ducks Unlimited and Greenhead Gear®. The World Team Goose Calling Championship™ was hard fought, and featured a host on champion callers. Names like Tim Grounds, Kelley Powers, Allan Stanley and Troy Dishner caused this year's list of callers to read like a who's who of calling. In the end, the young team of David and Derrick Damron claimed the title through teamwork and exceptional calling. Zackary Rednour claimed the U.S. Open Novice title and his younger brother Tyler Rednour won the senior division in the 14-17 class of the Junior U.S. Open. For the second year in a row, Jacob Stanley won the junior division of the Junior U.S. Open.
This year, the U.S. Open moved from it's original home at Mack's Prairie Wings in Stuttgart, Arkansas to the Ducks Unlimited Great Outdoors Festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Attendees to the festival responded in droves to the competition, and seats were jealously guarded between events due to the standing room only crowd. Between rounds Master of Ceremonies, Brian Noble, entertained spectators. Brian is an ex-Green Bay Packer linebacker, and now hosts his own regional outdoors show on ESPN.
